Situated on the Western Cost of the Indian Peninsula, the State is separated from Maharashtra by Terekhol river in the north, Karnataka in the south, western Ghats in the east and Arabian Sea in the West. The State has been a Portuguese colony and in in 1961 it merged with India as a union territory along with Daman and Diu. IN 1987, Goa was conferred State hood and Daman and Diu was made a separate union territory. Agriculture Rice is the main food crop. Pulses, ragi and other food crops are also grown in the State. Main cash crops are coconut, cashewnut, arecanut, sugarcane and fruits like pineapple, mango and banana. Industry The State has number of large and medium sector units, besides around 6000 small scale units working in the State. There are 16 industrial estates besides electronic city in the State.
The state of Goa has a Legislative Assembly with the strength of 40 elected members. Besides Goa has three-elected representatives in the central parliament, one in Rajya Sabha and two in Lok Sabha. The Governor is the head of the state and is advised by the Council of ministers headed by the chief minister. Panaji, a small city along the left bank of river Mandovi, is the seat of the State administration. For administrative purposes, the State has been divided into two districts with Collector as head of the district. These districts have been further divided into 11 talukas headed by Mamlatdars and Block Development Officers looking after administration and development related activities, respectively.
